OUTREACH
Each year NWTF chapters across the United States offer people opportunities to explore the outdoors through local hands-on events and hunts. Events are designed to pass on the traditions of safe, ethical hunting and teach conservation principals.
Wheelin' Sportsmen
The Outdoors is for Everyone
The Wheelin’ Sportsmen program began in October 2000 as the NWTF recognized the need to help people with mobility impairments enjoy the outdoors by participating in hunting and shooting sports.
Wheelin’ Sportsmen events provide participants an opportunity they may not be able to have on their own due to the lack of hunting land access, lack of the knowledge of how to return to the field after an injury or lack of necessary assistance.
Oftentimes, the knowledge and experience gained at one of our events allows the participants to continue hunting on their own throughout the year.
NWTF members receive a one year subscription to Turkey Call magazine, member benefits and more.
Women In The Outdoors
The Fastest Growing Outdoors Demographic
Prior to the implementation of Women in the Outdoors (WITO), the NWTF supported female-focused outdoor skills training programs through various other organizations. Seeing the demand for such activities for women, the NWTF expanded its outreach efforts to include a formal Women In The Outdoors Program in 1998.
In the past decade, the number of women owning firearms and participating in target shooting and hunting has soared. According to Southwick Associates, women now make up more than a quarter of all anglers and represent the fastest growing segment within the hunting and shooting communities.
Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship
Educating Tomorrow’s Conservationists Today
JAKES events help pass on the traditions of responsible, safe and ethical hunting, and teach the principles of habitat management.
Established in 1981, the JAKES program is dedicated to informing, educating and involving youth 17 and younger in wildlife conservation and the wise stewardship of our natural resources.
For $10 a year, JAKES receive a year subscription to JAKES Country Magazine (4 issues), a chance to win a hunt of a lifetime and a membership card.
Veterans Program
Stretching Our Wings
NWTF State Chapters, along with others across this great country, are endeavoring to make changes in lives of our service men and women. As of 2022, there were over 244,000 veterans making Oklahoma their home. This accounts for 8% of the adult civilian population of Oklahoma. Additionally, Oklahoma remains the top state for veterans, with over 104,000 veterans having some level of service-connected disability. It is through opportunities such as WITO, Wheelin Sportsmen and our Veterans programs that we can reintroduce the outdoors. We are stretching our wings through mentoring. Reach out to the Veteran Coordinator about a controlled hunt, fishing, archery, shooting sports and many other outdoor activities available for Oklahoma Veterans. Oftentimes, the knowledge and experience gained at one of our events allows the participants to continue hunting on their own or with friends for years to come.
NWTF members receive a one year subscription to Turkey Call magazine, member benefits and more.
